ইংরেজি গ্রামারের Preposition আইটেম নিয়ে অনেক শিক্ষার্থীরই দুশ্চিন্তা। আইটেমটির ব্যবহার বা প্রয়োগ নিয়েও আছে দ্বিধা-দ্বন্দ্ব। Preposition-এর ঠিকঠাক ব্যবহার জানা থাকলে পরীক্ষায় এ অংশে পুরো নম্বর তোলা কঠিন কিছু না। 

♦ Preposition-এর বৈশিষ্ট্য দুটি—

♦ এটি এমন শব্দ, যা noun বা pronoun-এর আগে বসে।

♦ এটি এমন শব্দ, যা উপরোক্ত noun বা pronoun-এর সঙ্গে অন্য কোনো word-এর সম্পর্ক প্রদর্শন করে।

♦ সাধারণত আট রকমের preposition আছে—

1. Simple preposition

2. Compound preposition

3. Double preposition

4. Participle preposition

5. Detached preposition

6. Disguised preposition

7. Phrasal preposition

8. Appropriate preposition

1. Simple prepositions :

In, to, by, through,

from, on, for, over, up,

off, at, out, of, with,

since.

2. Compound prepositions :

Along = (on+long)       Along = (on+lengthwise)          Against = (on+going)

After = (of+ter)            Above = (on+by+up)   Across = (on+cross)

Behind = (by+hind)     Amidst = (on+middle)  Before = (by+fore)

But = (by+out) Beyond = (by+yonder)            Between = (by+twain)

Beneath = (by+neath)  Below = (by+low)        Without = (with+out)

Within = (with+in)       Among = (on+gemang)            Around = (on+round)

3. Double prepositions :

একই object-এর আগে দুটি preposition থাকলে তখন সেটি double preposition|

যেমন : from beyond,

from within,

from behind etc.

4. Participle prepositions :

Notwithstanding

Owing

Concerning                 

Considering

Regarding                   

Respecting

During

5. Detached prepositions :

Whom are you waiting for?

Whom will you talk to?

6. Disguised prepositions :

O’clock = of clock.

Ashore = on shore.

Once a week = once on week.

Fifty dollars a month = Fifty dollars on month.

One dollar a day = one dollar on day.

Aside = on side.

7. Phrasal prepositions: দুই বা দুইয়ের বেশি শব্দ দিয়ে phrase তৈরি হবে, যার শেষ শব্দটি হবে একটি সাধারণ preposition|

যেমন—

In front of

With reference to

In stead to

By means of

On behalf of

In lieu of

On account of etc.
